Cuckoo

German School Peking, CN (not realised) 2002

A sculpture in the form of a giant teapot is placed on a pedestal on the playground of the German School in Peking. The pot is mechanically operated and turns slowly on its own axis (one revolution per hour), thereby functioning like a clock. Synchronized with the recess gong, the lid of the pot opens and the figure of a cuckoo appears with the typical call of a Black Forest cuckoo clock. The bird then disappears again in the pot until the next recess gong. The work is a kind of Trojan horse that interlocks German and Chinese culture.
