Hans Hemmert interviewed by Anita Malhotra
Berlin-based artist Hans Hemmert is best known for his groundbreaking conceptual artwork, most notably his performative balloon sculptures. His work has been exhibited at the MoMA in New York, the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (CGAC) in Spain and Shanghai’s Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.
AM: Where did you grow up?
HH: I grew up in Bavaria – in the countryside.
AM: What were your first experiences with art?

TT: Seit 1992 ist der Ballon – vorzugsweise aus gelbem Latex – Ihr wichtigstes künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel. Auch bei Ihren neueren, “festen” Skulpturen aus Fiberglas scheint er die Abgussform vorzugeben. Wie und in welcher Situation beziehungsweise an welchem Punkt haben Sie den Ballon für sich entdeckt?
HH: Ich hatte als Student an der HdK Berlin, aus einem figürlichen Ansatz heraus, eigentlich “abstract steel-sculpture” – sozusagen in der Nachfolge von Anthony Caro – bei David Evison studiert. Das bedeutete, große, abstrakte Eisenskulpturen herzustellen, mit denen man dann anschließend hauptsächlich ein Gewichts- und Lagerproblem hatte.
